I’ve just finished reading a wonderful book with my class. It’s called Wombat goes Walkabout. It’s about a wombat … in Australia ….. who thinks he can’t do anything interesting but ends up as a hero!!

    The pictures are beautiful.
If you want to borrow it please come and ask.

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife’. (Jane Austen 1813).

This is the first sentence of Jane Austen’s novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’. It introduces the reader to one of the major themes of the novel which is marriage, and also leads the reader to other themes which are closely related such as love, passion and courtship.
This is an incredible novel that has captivated many readers for hundreds of years, it certainly seems to appeal to a large majority of female readers and covers topics that although were written in 1813 are transferrable to todays modern society.

I enjoyed this novel immensely and would recommend it to anybody, or any female at least.

The Firm is a 1991 legal thriller and the second novel by John Grisham. It was his first widely recognized piece of work, and in 1993, was made into a film starring Tom Cruise.

It introduces the story of a very ambitious graduate law student who is seeking Wealth and Fortune by working at a top American law firm, but this gritty thriller shows the lengths he may have to go to achieve this and will question his marriage, morals and integrity.

I think this blog is brilliant. Fabulous way to share ideas about great books – beats standing in WH Smith for hours trying to work out which one to buy. Well done everyone. I will keep an eye on this for ideas for Christmas presents for my nieces.
    Well done Mrs. C!

  14.   Mrs. Greve on July 3, 2008 3:25 pm

Oh my goodness! What a wonderful blog. I have bookmarked it so I can keep coming back. I teach middle school in Michigan, USA. We read many books this year, but the following three are ones the majority of the students enjoyed the most.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis.
This is a fictional account of an African American family who is visiting their grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama when (fact) the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church was burned down by racists with four little girls inside sparking many riots.

An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 by Jim Murphy.
This is a fascinating non-fiction account of an epidemic that swept the then capital of the United States, Philadelphia. (For some reason, this does not appear in our history books, even though we faced a constitutional crises when President Washington had to flee the city.)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney.
This is a series that the boys absolutely love. When they are reading it during Sustained Silent Reading time, they are actually laughing out loud. Of course then the girls want to know what is so funny and so they check it out, too.

  15.   mrscunningham on July 3, 2008 5:21 pm

I love the sound of diary of a wimpy kid..I will try to get a copy for reading club thanks Mrs. Greve it is nice to get comments from our friends in America

  17.   Miss Holdgate on July 8, 2008 9:57 am

I am delighted that the reading club has got so many members. My love of books comes from Miss Mmehan (the teacher in Y4) who every afternoon read us extracts from a book. I always remember her reading ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and getting my mum to take me to the library on the way home from school to find out what happened next…..as I couldn’t wait. My mum used to read to me at night and I loved ‘Amelia Jane’ by Enid Blyton. When I became a teacher that was the first story I read to my class and they loved it; especially when she kept saying ‘pooh’! I still have a few of my old books including ‘Amelia Jane’ and some of my very favourite Enid Blyton adventure stories. Which books do you think you will ALWAY want to keep?

  18.   Mrs. Moody on July 8, 2008 10:39 am

Miss Holdgate has set me thinking! I used to love Enid Blyton’s “Famous Five” stories – I was very curious as to what “lashings of ginger beer” would taste like.

My best memory of reading at school was when I had to learn “Matilda” by Hilaire Belloc and then recite it to the class. Matilda was a very naughty girl who told such dreadful lies, it made one gasp and stretch one’s eyes!

    Reading is a wonderful gift……..

  19.   mrscunningham on July 8, 2008 12:08 pm

Miss. Holgate and Mrs. Moody got me thinking so I decided to take a walk down memory lane too….my favourite book was Mallory Towers, as a girl I would dream about going to such an exciting boarding school…..I remember asking my mother if I could go to one and it made her cry…..ahhhh the memories….I also loved Enid Blyton’s “Faraway Tree” some books just live forever in your mind! What about you Mrs. Greve what books were popular in America when you were young?

I come from Czech Republic and one of my favourite czech books is called “The Grandmother” by Bozena Nemcova. It is a story about a little girl growing up in a traditional Czech village and going through all kind of things in life. This book shows traditional Czech life style of that era. I really recommed to read it. It’s a must.

  37.   Mrs Ansley on July 18, 2008 3:45 pm

    Hello readers,
how exciting to have your own blog! You have made me think about which stories I used to like when I was young. My favourites were the Milly Molly Mandy series and the Family from One End Street. I bought Milly Molly Mandy for Sophie when she was younger and she loved it too but I haven’t been able to find The Family From One End Street. If you find a copy, please let me know. Both sets of books were about children a long time ago who had lovely adventures, got into scrapes, enjoyed playing out and seemed to have lots of picnics in the sunshine!
    Happy reading over the summer.
    Best wishes,
    Mrs Ansley.

  38.   mrscunningham on July 22, 2008 9:43 am

    Hi reading club,
I spotted this book over the weekend and think you would all enjoy reading it.
It is all about Captain underpants!
George and Harold create the greatest super-hero in their school’s history and now they’re about to bring him to life. Meet Captain Underpants. His identity is so secret, even he doesn’t know who he is. The novel introduces “flip-o-rama” the illustration technique that lets you animate the action.

    Hi to everyone
My name is Emma and i would like to tell you about a book I read called the twits. It is by a famous author called Roald dahl. In the story the characters get to look evil and eviler because they are bad and thats how the badness comes out. They end up very ugly I think he is saying when you are bad on the inside it comes out on the outside. Some parts are really funny why don’t you go and read it you will enjoy it.

  41.   Kath on July 25, 2008 12:00 pm

    Hello Readers,
I came across your blog and thought it would be nice to leave a message. My favourite book of all time is Jane Eyre. It was written a long time ago by a lady called Charlotte Bronte.

She lived in a small vilage in Yorkshire called Howarth. It is a really nice place to visit with lots of very quaint shops. Her brothers and sisters also wrote, her sister Emily wrote a famous book called Wuthering Heights which is set on the edge of the Yorkshire moors.

Anyway I enjoyed writing to you
    Bye readers.
    Kath.

What a great blog! I teach grade 2s for 1 lesson of information technology a week so maybe we could do some work together. They are a small group though as we live in the country in south eastern Australia and most of our students live on farms. The weather is cold here and wet at the moment as we are in the middle of winter. Many farmers are now lambing but the poor little lambs still seem to survive if they have good mothers.

  43.   mrscunningham on July 28, 2008 12:47 pm

    Hi Anne
I think my children will love working with yours. We are presently in a heat wave and everyone is saying it is too hot!! What types of books are popular with children in Australia?

    Hi Mrs.Cunningham,
I am from Canada. I go to a school in Courtenay, B.C. I think my school is awesome. Our school also has a soccer team and I love to play soccer as you can probably tell by looking at a couple posts from my blog. Our class gets a gym period almost every day of the week and gym is my favourite subject! Another thing I love about my school is there is a lot of great people and a lot of those people would make great friends.

    Bye!
